São João da Pesqueira received the Cities of Wine Contest in 2023
São João da Pesqueira was the city that hosted the 3rd Cities of Wine Contest, in 2023. The decision was approved at the last Intermunicipal Assembly of the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities (AMPV), which took place on November 10, in Torres Vedras .
AMPV and ARVP – Associação das Rotas dos Vinhos de Portugal were the organizers of this great event, held under the “Wine in Moderation” program.
The characteristics of this competition make it unique in Portugal: it is a competition that jointly promotes wines and territories, assuming a joint registration of producers and their respective municipalities. There is also a very close relationship with the International Wine Cities Competition, which takes place every year in Italy.
The 1st edition of the Cidades do Vinho Contest took place in Lagoa, in the Algarve, in May 2021. It had the participation of 550 wines from mainland Portugal and islands and had 160 medals awarded: 12 of Great Gold, 90 of Gold and 58 of Silver. The fortified wine Pacheca Tawny 40 years old, from Quinta da Pacheca (Municipality of Lamego) was the most scored.
In the 2nd Wine Cities Contest — which took place in May this year in Setúbal — 346 wines from 55 municipalities competed and 113 Medals were awarded: 30 Great Gold Medals and 83 Gold Medals. The highest scoring wine was the liqueur Moscatel Roxo de Setúbal DO Superior da Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
The Cidades do Vinho Contest had the High Sponsorship of the President of the Republic and the institutional support of the Ministry of Agriculture. Vasco d’Avillez presided over the Honor Committee in the last two editions, António Curvelo Garcia presided over the Scientific Technical Commission and António Ventura was president of the Jury.
Adega de Penalva was present and it was with great satisfaction that it was awarded three GOLD MEDALS
